THIS CAR IS NOW SOLD…
This rare 1961 Porsche 356 B Karmann Hardtop is currently undergoing a concourse restoration in our workshop and will be completed by Jan 2006. The car has been stripped out and sandblasted ready for repanelling. Please see our website for a photographic update of the ongoing restoration.
Karmann built a hardtop Coupe version launched in 1960 on the cabriolet bodyshell, the hardtop being firmly welded into place. With its distinctive ‘notchback’ styling, this model should not be confused with the cabriolet itself, which could be fitted with a detachable hardtop. The idea behind the project was to widen the 356’s appeal and some people appreciated the increase in all-round visibility created by the longer rear and side windows.
The Karmann production hardtop cars can generally be distinguished from the cabriolets fitted with detachable hardtops by their, paintwork, which was usually in one colour, whereas a separate hardtop would have been in different colour from the body. A sunroof was available as an extra cost option on the Karmann hardtop.
With only 1048 models produced during 1961 and ’62 – surviving specimens are very rare and sort after.
