In 1984, Porsche also introduced the M491 option. Officially called the Supersport in the UK, the option is perhaps sometimes more commonly known as “Turbo-look”.

It was a style that resembled the Porsche 930 Turbo with wider front and rear wheel arches and the distinctive “Whale Tail“ rear spoiler.

The ‘Turbo-Look’ option featured the stiffer turbo suspension and the superior turbo braking system as well as the wider turbo wheels. Sales of the Supersport were high for its first two years in the United States because the desirable 930 was not available.

For the model year 1987 the Major 3.2 Carrera upgrades included the more user friendly G50 (Getrag) gearbox and hydraulic clutch operation. Rear fog and reverse lights integrated into rear reflective strip. Cabriolet receives powered roof. Turbo-Look now renamed ‘Carrera Supersport’.

Turbo-Look option Carreras were originally known in the UK as ‘Carrera Turbo-Look cars with Special Sports Equipment’. Subsequently this denomination was shortened considerably to the altogether more manageable SuperSport around 1987.

The Supersport Cabriolet cost around £10,000 more than a standard 3.2, 911 in the late 1980’s and yet offered all the external styling cues of a ‘930’ 911 Turbo. A limited slip differential, the ‘Whale Tail’ rear spoiler, wider front and rear wheel arches, Turbo Fuchs wheels and tyres, and also including the upgraded Turbo brakes and suspension completed the M491 option package.

It is believed that sales in the US of the Supersport were particularly strong for its first two years because the 930 was not yet available. It is also believed (and not verified) that only 75 Supersport cars were produced for the UK market – half of which were Cabriolets – however, as the Turbo-Look option was in fact an ‘Option’ and not a ‘Type’, actual production numbers of cars specified with the M491 option remains unclear.

There are currently 27 registered UK owned Supersport cabs, produced in 1989, on the unofficial ‘Turbo Look’ register (correct at the time of writing) – five of which were produced in Black.

Legend has it there is an article in Porsche Post (circa 2010) that eludes to only eighteen (18) right-hand drive Supersport Cabriolets produced between 1987 and 1989. We have so far not tracked this article down…

It is however true that the Supersport kicked off a UK customer love affair with the wide-body, Turbo-Look for non-turbo Porsche 911’s, a combination that has proved hugely popular with Porsche and it’s customers ever since.

This particular model is an original 3 owner car from new with a great history file and an up to date service record, most recenntly in the hands of Export 56.

This lovely 3 owner car has recently benefited from various OEM replacement parts including: new power window switches, brake pads and hoses, new thermostat, heating box and headlight seals. The tonneau cover has been replaced as well as the door cards and locking wheel nuts.

A beautiful example of the rarely seen Porsche 911 Supersport Cabriolet finished in black with cream leather interior and the period iconic Turbo spoiler, Fusch alloy wheels and G50 gearbox.

This particular example was first registered on 3rd of March 1989 through A.F.N Porsche in Guidlford and comes with a large history folder detailing the mileage, previous owners, old Mot’s (16) , service invoices and, also comes with a number of dealer booklets and service booklet when the car was supplied new.

This particular example is currently in professional dry storage having been fastidiously maintain and very lightly used over the last two years, leaving a beautifully presented car, with viewing highly recommended.
