We are delighted to offer for sale a genuine, matching-numbers 1968, 911 2.0T Sportomatic Coupe, one of only a handful to be imported into the UK by Porsche GB in that year. This 911 is a delightful and very original example of a model which is becoming increasingly rare.
Porsche developed semi automatic transmission system - essentially a 4 speed gearbox with a clutch mechanism actuated by microswitches rather than a clutch pedal, and hence arguably not dissimilar to a modern Tiptronic in Sport mode - is frequently maligned, generally because like most electro mechanical devices they need to be set up and maintained properly if they are to function efficiently - and many aren't.
Chassis # 11820746 was completed at Stuttgart, Zuffenhausen in 1968 and supplied new as a Right Hand Drive model via AFN Limited, Isleworth. It was original presented with Sand Beige 6607 body colour and black leatherette interior, this scheme is still current on the car today. 40 years on the car has been loaned to Porsche GB for display at both the new Porsche Driving Centre at Silverstone and Porsche GB Reading.
First registered in the UK on the 01.08.1968 this A-Series car shows a build date of late 1967. Supplied with the car is a comprehensive history file, showing 7 owners. During that period it has been meticulously maintained by Porsche specialists, with a large file of services records, MOT’s and maintenance receipts. For many owners, the easy way out has been to replace the Sportomatic gearbox with a manual one. Luckily, the decision with this particular car was ensure that the Sportomatic gearbox functioned to the best of its abilities.
The Sportomatic transmission functions extremely well, its actuating mechanism having been thoroughly checked and adjusted as part of the car's light restoration. A beautiful and very useable example of a classic period model, and benefiting from a classic and increasingly rare transmission system that’s all too ideal for modern traffic.
This car has been well maintained regardless of cost and represents a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine matching numbers Porsche 911 2.0T Sportomatic, in outstanding original condition throughout. Complete with all tools, original handbooks, service receipts and history file. UK registered with MOT and historic vehicle tax status, ready for immediate use.
